Τα Μετέωρα, η «θηβαΐδα» των Σταγών, όπως εύστοχα αποκλήθηκαν, αποτελούν το μεγαλύτερο και σημαντικότερο μετά το Αγιον Όρος μοναστικό συγκρότημα του ελλαδικού χώρου. Το πέτρινο δάσος των θεόσταλτων βράχων τους σχηματίζει ένα από τα θαυμαστότερα και υποβλητικότερα τοπία του κόσμου. Τα πρώτα ίχνη του μετεωρίτικου μοναχισμού χάνονται στα βάθη των αιώνων. Περισσότερα από είκοσι μοναστήρια, σκαρφαλωμένα στους θεόκτιστους βράχους, συγκροτούσαν τη μοναστική «λιθόπολη» των μετεωριτών αναχωρητών. Σήμερα, έξι μοναστήρια πάνω στις αγιομετεωρίτικες πέτρες συνεχίζουν χωρίς διακοπή για εξακόσια και περισσότερα χρόνια, γνήσια, αυστηρή και απαραχάρακτη την παράδοση του ορθόδοξου μοναχισμού.
