Τα Ελληνικά Χρονικά ήταν δισεβδομαδιαία εφημερίδα πολιτική και πολεμική, που εκδιδόταν στο Μεσολόγγι από τον Ελβετό φιλέλληνα γιατρό Ιωάννη – Ιάκωβο Μάγερ (1798-1826).
Το πρώτο φύλλο της εφημερίδας κυκλοφόρησε την 1η Ιανουαρίου 1824 και τυπώθηκε σ’ ένα μικρό χειροκίνητο πιεστήριο του Μεσολογγίου, ενώ από τις 20 Απριλίου τα Ελληνικά Χρονικά τυπώνονταν σ’ ένα πιο σύγχρονο χειροκίνητο πιεστήριο, που έφερε με πολλές δυσκολίες στο Μεσολόγγι ο Άγγλος συνταγματάρχης Λέστερ Στάνχοουπ, δωρεά του Φιλελληνικού κομιτάτου του Λονδίνου.
Η έκδοση της εφημερίδας συνέπεσε με την πιο ηρωική περίοδο για την εξέλιξη του Αγώνα στη Δυτική Στερεά Ελλάδα -από την Πρωτοχρονιά του 1824 μέχρι τις 20 Φεβρουαρίου του 1826. Στο διάστημα όμως αυτό σημειώθηκαν αρκετές διακοπές στην έκδοσή της που οφείλονταν στα δεινά του πολέμου και τις τραγικές συνθήκες που δημιούργησε ο γενικός αποκλεισμός της πόλης του Μεσολογγίου από τις στρατιές του Κιουταχή και του Ιμπραήμ, η έλλειψη εφοδίων κι ο λιμός που ακολούθησε. Στο φύλλο 65-66 της 19ης Αυγούστου 1825, η εφημερίδα δικαιολογώντας τις διακοπές αυτές γράφει: «Ζητούμε συγγνώμην από τους κυρίους συνδρομητάς μας διά την διακοπήν, την οποίαν εξ ανάγκης μεταχειριζόμεθα ενίοτε εις την εφημερίδα. Αι συνεχείς ζημίαι, τας οποίας από τον εχθρικόν πυροβολισμόν πάσχει η τυπογραφία, γίνονται αιτίαι αναπόφευκτοι ταύτης της διακοπής…».
Η ύλη της εφημερίδας διαπνεόταν από φιλελεύθερο πνεύμα και περιλάμβανε προκηρύξεις και ανακοινώσεις της ελληνικής διοίκησης, εσωτερικές και εξωτερικές ειδήσεις, άρθρα, στα οποία αναπτύσσονταν απόψεις για πολιτειακά θέματα. Συχνά δημοσίευε και λογοτεχνικά κείμενα, κυρίως ποιήματα, καθώς και επιστολές των συνδρομητών. Τους τελευταίους μήνες της έκδοσής της δημοσιεύονταν ημερολογιακά οι περιγραφές των πολεμικών συγκρούσεων και για το λόγο αυτό η εφημερίδα αποτελεί πολύτιμη πηγή για την ιστορία της Επανάστασης και ειδικότερα για την πορεία των επιχειρήσεων κατά τη διάρκεια της δεύτερης πολιορκίας του Μεσολογγίου.
Τα Ελληνικά Χρονικά έπαψαν να κυκλοφορούν στις 20 Φεβρουαρίου 1826, όταν μία βόμβα από το τουρκοαιγυπτιακό στρατόπεδο κατέστρεψε ολοκληρωτικά τις εγκαταστάσεις της, λίγες εβδομάδες πριν από την έξοδο των πολιορκημένων. Συνολικά, τα “Ελληνικά Χρονικά” κυκλοφόρησαν 226 φύλλα, κάποια από τα οποία διασώζονται στην Εθνική Βιβλιοθήκη.
Η εφημερίδα επανεκδόθηκε στο Μεσολόγγι στις 13 Φεβρουαρίου 1859 από τον δικηγόρο και λόγιο Αναστάσιο Κ. Γιαννόπουλο. Είχε διαφορετική μορφή και η ύλη της περιείχε αναδημοσιεύσεις άρθρων από τον ελληνικό και διεθνή τύπο. Ήταν εβδομαδιαία και η κυκλοφορία της διάρκεσε έως τις 15 Ιουνίου 1864.
