Λίγες ημέρες απομένουν μέχρι το Άγιο Πάσχα της Ορθοδοξίας, τη μεγαλύτερη γιορτή της Χριστιανοσύνης. Μια γιορτή με την οποία τιμάται η ένδοξη Ανάσταση του Θεανθρώπου με τον Πιστό Χριστιανό να περνάει από την πένθιμη ατμόσφαιρα της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας στο συναίσθημα της χαράς, της ανάτασης και της λύτρωσης.
Αρχικά το Πάσχα αποτελούσε τη μεγαλύτερη εβραϊκή γιορτή, που γιορταζόταν προς τιμήν της απελευθέρωσης των Ισραηλιτών από την Αιγυπτιακή αιχμαλωσία. Η ονομασία του προέρχεται από το εβραϊκό Πεσάχ που σημαίνει «διάβαση», προς ανάμνηση της διάβασης του περιούσιου λαού από τη σκλαβιά στην ελευθερία.
Μετά το Πάθος και την Ανάσταση του Κυρίου, το νόημα της εορτής μετασχηματίστηκε και πήρε νέα σωτηριολογική διάσταση για να αποτελεί τελικά την κορυφαία στιγμή της Χριστιανοσύνης, την ύψιστη γιορτή του εορτολογίου της.
Το χριστιανικό Πάσχα είναι κινητή γιορτή και ο εορτασμός του, για τους Ορθόδοξους Χριστιανούς γίνεται την Κυριακή μετά την πανσέληνο του Μαρτίου. Έτσι οι Χριστιανοί, ξεχωριστά και αντίθετα από τους Εβραίους, γιορτάζουν τη Σταύρωση και την Ανάσταση του Ιησού Χριστού και το πέρασμα από το θάνατο στη ζωή. Στην ουσία, το Άγιο Πάσχα δεν είναι μια ημέρα, μια Κυριακή που ακολουθεί το Σάββατο της Ανάστασης, αλλά ένα διάστημα δύο εβδομάδων με σημαντικούς σταθμούς μέσα σε αυτό: Από την Κυριακή των Βαΐων (συμβολίζει την είσοδο του Χριστού στα Ιεροσόλυμα) ως την Κυριακή του Θωμά.
Η πρώτη εβδομάδα ονομάζεται Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα ή Εβδομάδα των Παθών, αρχίζει με την Κυριακή των Βαΐων και κορυφώνεται το Μεγάλο Σάββατο. Όλη τη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα, είναι περίοδος νηστείας και συμμετοχής στις εκκλησιαστικές λειτουργίες.
Η δεύτερη εβδομάδα του Πάσχα ονομάζεται Εβδομάδα του Πάσχα ή Διακαινήσιμος εβδομάδα και αρχίζει με την Κυριακή του Πάσχα και ολοκληρώνεται την Κυριακή του Θωμά.
Η ορθόδοξη θεώρηση για την Ανάσταση συμπυκνώνεται στον πασίγνωστο ύμνο:
Χριστός Ανέστη εκ νεκρών
θανάτω θάνατον πατήσας και
τους εν τοις μνήμασι ζωήν
χαρισάμενος!
